JAZZ
WORKSHOP
The Jazz
Workshop is an informal co-operative venture run by musicians for musicians. It
has now been running successfully for over fourteen years, with weekly sessions
held in venues in the South East Buckinghamshire/South West Hertfordshire
area. We now meet at the Sportsman,
Croxley Green, Rickmansworth near Watford, every Monday night at 8
p.m.

The Jazz
Workshop has two main aims, which are primarily educational:
Ø
to
introduce new musicians to playing jazz, so that more people play jazz
Ø
to
provide opportunities for existing jazz musicians to play together to improve
their ensemble playing.
We attempt
to do this by providing an opportunity for musicians new to playing jazz to try
it out in an informal, friendly atmosphere, with no ‘school room’ feel. We see
the Jazz Workshop as a ‘first step’ in education for new jazz musicians, from
where, if they want to, they may progress to more formal workshops, rehearsal
bands, etc.
We are also
providing an easily accessible opportunity for more experienced players to get
together to try out new ideas, and practice their ensemble playing.
A
by-product of this approach is that everyone can have great fun meeting and
playing with different musicians.
History
The Jazz
Workshop was started by Derek Mander in May 1996 as a result of an idea developed
at the White Hill Centre, Chesham, Buckinghamshire, and then rapidly became
established at the Swan, Ley Hill, near Chesham, transferring to the White
Lion, Little Chalfont in June 1998, where we met until March 2002, and then at
the Sugar loaves, Little Chalfont, Buckinghamshire until May 2003. We now meet
every Monday night from 8 p.m. at The Sportsman, Croxley Green,
Rickmansworth, near Watford, Hertfordshire.
